The Agaga Lolo — The Big Cowry
Every Soul Has Irreplaceable Value
There is a proverb among the Ewe people of Ghana that has stayed with me long after my years in the Volta Region ended. It is simple on the surface, yet the more you sit with it, the deeper it goes.
“Agaga lolo me ƒle na agaga eve ƒe nu o”
One big cowry cannot be used to pay for two cowries.
The Cowry Shell _ Africa’s Ancient Currency
To understand this proverb fully, you must first understand the cowry shell.
Long before paper money, long before coins and banks and digital transactions, the cowry shell was Africa’s currency. Small, smooth, and naturally beautiful, cowries were traded across the continent for centuries used to purchase food, land, livestock, and cloth. They travelled trade routes from West Africa to East Africa, from the Sahara to the coast.
But the cowry was never just money. It carried spiritual significance too. It was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, and divine protection. Worn as jewellery by royalty, placed on sacred shrines, woven into the fabric of ceremonies, the cowry shell was a vessel of value in every sense of the word.
When the Ewe people chose the cowry to anchor this proverb, they were speaking in a language their entire world understood.
What The Proverb Teaches
One big cowry cannot be used to pay for two cowries.
At first glance this sounds like simple mathematics. But look closer.
It is saying this no matter how great you are, no matter how much you have achieved, no matter how high you have risen , you cannot replace two people. You cannot do what two people can do. You cannot be what two people can be. Every individual is unique. Every person carries strengths, gifts, and perspectives that belong only to them. The strongest among us cannot substitute for the simplest among us, because the simplest among us carries something the strongest does not have.
This is the Agaga Lolo teaching : value everyone, because everyone is irreplaceable.

We live in a world that ranks people. That measures human worth by wealth, status, education, and fame. That tells some people they matter more than others.
The Agaga Lolo proverb cuts through all of that.
It says look at this cowry. One big cowry, impressive and valuable as it is, cannot replace two smaller ones. Because value is not just about size or status. Value is about what something uniquely carries. What it uniquely contributes. What only it can be.
Every human being is a cowry. Different in size, different in appearance ,different in feelings and countenance, different in the story they carry but irreplaceable. Unrepeatable. Worthy of respect.
